Replacing or installing an overhead crane is a major project for any industrial facility. While the new crane is designed to meet production requirements, its performance also depends on the quality and condition of the crane runway on which it operates.
Before commissioning, several key assessments are essential to ensure the safety, performance, and long-term reliability of the installation.
The crane runway must be in good condition to withstand the loads generated by the overhead crane. A detailed inspection helps identify deterioration, deformation, cracking, or corrosion that could compromise the structural integrity of the runway.
The alignment and geometry of the crane runway must comply with the tolerances specified by applicable standards, particularly ISO 12488-1. Deviations from these tolerances can lead to premature wheel wear, increased structural stresses, and reduced crane performance.
Beyond its physical condition, the crane runway must be capable of supporting all loads transmitted by the lifting equipment during operation. A structural assessment is essential to verify that the existing supporting structure is suitable for the new crane or to identify any reinforcement required.
